RODNEY APPELL, beloved husband and father, died on Monday, January 19, at the age of 61. Dr. Appell had an illustrious career in academic urology, devoting his life to the care of patients with urinary dysfunction and incontinence. While he was an internationally respected and tireless surgeon and teacher, his greatest love was for his wife, Susan, and his sons Gordon and Jarett, and Gordon's wife Jennifer, who is expecting a baby in June. Rodney, son of the late Robert and Dorothy (Gayer) Appell, grew up in Philadelphia, PA, and earned his undergraduate degree at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA. He attended medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, and went on to complete his residency training in urology at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Appell served on the faculties at Louisiana State University in New Orleans, and then spent seven years practicing at the Cleveland Clinic. He moved to Houston in 2000, joining the faculty of the Scott Department of Urology at Baylor College of Medicine. This past year, he moved to the Vanguard Urologic Institute in Houston, serving as Director of the Texas Continence Center, while continuing to serve as a urology volunteer faculty member for both Baylor College of Medicine and University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. He authored well over 150 publications in urology and received countless honors for his professional contributions, including being listed on numerous occasions in Best Doctors in America, and recently receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU). Dr. Appell was an extraordinary teacher and mentor, having trained countless students, residents and fellows in the art and science of caring for patients with voiding dysfunction and incontinence. He was profoundly devoted to helping women with urinary dysfunction, and was one of the pivotal figures in the development of the modern era of female urology. Rodney was thoroughly devoted to his family, and is survived by his wife Susan of 37 years, his sons, Jarett and Gordon, and daughter-in-law Jennifer of New York City. Rodney's untimely death leaves a great void for his family and his colleagues. His family will remember his limitless love and the sacrifices he made to provide them with the highest quality of life. He took great pride in the opportunities enjoyed by his children as the result of his efforts. Rodney's colleagues will remember his devotion to his patients and students, and the passion and integrity he applied to all his efforts. A Memorial Service for Rodney will be held at Congregation Beth Israel, 5600 North Braeswood, in Houston, at 2pm on Wednesday, January 21, followed by a minyan service at their residence at 5:30 pm.
