Educational Needs: Neurogenic bladder (NGB) is a commonly treated urological condition. However, despite the fact that most urologists have multiple chronic patients with NGB in their practice, there is often a poor understanding of how often these patients should be regularly seen, what is the appropriate evaluation when they are seen and what treatment options are available for these patients. This poor understanding may reflect the fact that many residency programs do not have service time solely dedicated to the teaching of NGB. Appropriate knowledge of NGB, leading to appropriate care of these patients, will minimize the poor outcomes (i.e., recurrent UTI, stones, damage to the upper urinary tracts) that be seen in this patient population. In addition, we have seen the introduction of new technologies over the past decade that are still evolving and need to be understood by the urologist who cares for NGB.
The SUFU program at the 2008 AUA Annual Meeting titled “Neuropathic Lower Urinary Tract Dysfunction” is designed to focus on needs in these areas of NGB: evaluation, currently approved treatment options and newer therapies currently in use as well as some options which are under investigation.
Meeting Objectives: At the end of the session, the attendees should be able to:
- Identify how often patients with NGB should be evaluated and what should be involved with that evaluation.
- Identify the various treatment options for patients with spinal cord injury
- Recognize the various challenges associated with treating bladder dysfunction secondary to neuropathic conditions such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s.
- Recognize newer therapies presently available (i.e. botulinum toxin and nerve stimulation) as well as potential future therapies currently under investigation (i.e., use of stem cells, tissue engineering).
